The IMO regulations from 2020 are clear: The limit for SOx emissions is 0.5 percent generally and in some areas as low as 0.1 percent. Switching from diesel to LNG significantly reduces sulphur emission levels. However, with LNG you need fast and reliable detection of potential gas leakages. How do you achieve that?
Crucial system
There are many safety aspects to consider when running a vessel on LNG. No wonder when you consider that the energy density for LNG – liquefied natural gas – is approximately 600 times higher than for natural gas at atmospheric conditions. Correct placement of tanks and ducts are essential as well as shut-down functionality and crew training.
What you also need is a reliable and easy-to-use gas detection system. In the case of an LNG leakage, every second counts for staff to take the right actions and put themselves and other people on board in safety. Beyond the obvious first-priority of saving lives, gas detection is also about protecting the company brand image and reputation in the industry.
Two methods
Consilium offers two ways of detecting gas: Point and Sampling. Point detection means that detectors are placed in strategic locations, giving input to a central system. Sampling is the other way around – all detectors are placed centrally with pipes going out to all the spots where gas detection is needed.
The choice of method depends on the environment. Sampling is common in places where, for example, oil, water or vibrations make it difficult for detectors to perform and survive. LNG-driven vessels often use both point and sampling detection.
Talk safety with us
We have been in the gas detection business since 1959. Our CGD50/500 gas detection system can be configured as a conventional point to point system where each detector is hardwired to the central unit, or as a distributed system. Modular design makes both large and small systems possible without compromising on user-friendliness. The system is based on the same platform as our fire detection system, making life easier for many operators.
Feel free to contact us for more information on gas detection or to arrange a meeting. We are always ready to talk safety with you and your colleagues.
